Re: List Your Favorite Dead and NonDead Sandwich |
2x a month?!?! You are a lucky man. I think a road trip is in order. Paesanos and the Pit.
And Mr. Jims on South Street in Philly for a steak - wit, wiz.
And Capriotti's...and Di Nardo's, and Mrs. Robino's or any place near Union Street and 4th that ends in a vowel for that matter.

Jim's? If you are going to make a road trip for a cheesesteak, you might as well go down to Pat's or Geno's. I preferred Geno's because they had better cheese fries.

elb -
I guess that's why Baskin-Robbins has 31 flavors. I grew up in Wilmington, DE near Finster - rival high schools, Go Raiders.
We avoided Pat's/Geno's like the plague. Mr Jim's is much, much better in my opinion. Pat's and Geno's were too touristy for steaks, but thumbs up on the cheese fries.
The best place used to be DiConstanza's until they got shut down by the health department for food poisoning about 400 people at a small Italian wedding.....

DiCo's was the place. I remeber my Dad used to bring home a large and 3 extra rolls and you could make four sandwiches from all of the stuff they packed onto one them.
Pat's/Genos are definitely tourist places. Pat's may be the home of the original cheese steak, but they have been living off of their rep for years. Penty of other places in Philly (and Wilmington) for a good cheese steak.
Capriotti's still has great Turkey sammies, and Robinos is still our go to place for italian food! Still has great prices and huge portions.

I agree Pats and Genos steaks are decent, but so many other places for a better steak. My fav is Johns Roast Pork (and a killer roast pork sammy as well of course). Chinks, Cosmis, and White House are really good too. All are waaay better than Genos/Pats IMHO

Re: List Your Favorite Dead and NonDead Sandwich |
I liked Jim's and the last time i was downtown i took my kids there. However I always thought it was much more touristy than the true South Philly places (circa early to mid '80s). South Street was much more accessible so you either had tourists or suits. Then again i was in college back then and most of my cheesesteak excursions were at 3 AM so tourists were never really an issue down on 9th Street. Guys across the street playing softball, well thats another story.
I grew up NE of the city (Levittown, PA most of the time) so most of my cheesesteaks came from local pizza places. They were all pretty good.

Capriotties, yes!
They make the Bobbie sandwich; turkey, cranberry, AND stuffing.
